Physics Projects

Over the years many Physics students have won awards for the work they carried out on their final year projects. Within the School of Physical Sciences the Fryar Medal is awarded to the best final year project in any given academic year. The Lynam Award is made to the overall best final year student.

Many of these students have also been awarded external prizes such as bursaries from the Instrument Society of America (Ireland section) and the Institute of Physics. We hope to bring you abstracts from these award winning projects on this web page over the coming months.

Ruth Bridcut

Ruth Bridcut received the 1997/98 Lynam Medal. Her final year project was entitled Automated Detection of Heart Murmurs.

Ruth has also been awarded the "Ger Dullea Award" from the ISA Ireland Section by the 1998 Honours & Awards Committee for her work on this project. Ruth will be presented with a silver medallion and bursary of £500 to assist her in postgraduate studies.

Ruth continued her studies and went to the University of Aberdeen where she gained a MSc in Medical Physics. After qualifying, ruth moved to Belfast where she is working as a Medical Physicist in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

David Phillips

David Phillips was awarded the 1998 Fryar Medal for his project on interfacing a door intercom to a telephone security system so as to enable remote control of access and security. David is at present working with Ericssons in Dublin.

Thomas Leahy

Thomas Leahy was awarded the 1993 Fryar Medal for his project on statistical in mass metrology. This was carried out in association with the section of Forbairt which has now become the National Metrology Laboratory.
After his graduation Tom continued this work on mass metrology and obtained his doctorate in 1998 for his PhD. thesis entitled "A unified approach to statistical estimation and model parameterisation in mass calibration" with Brian Lawless acting as his supervisor.
Some of the work on this project was carried out at PTB (Physikalisch-Technische-Bundesanstalt) in Braunschweig, Germany which is the German Standards Organisation and also at BIPM ( Bureau International de Poids et Mesures) in Paris where the International Prototype Kilogram is kept.
Tom is now working with Intel Ireland at their fabrication plant in Leixlip.
