1997/1998

Highlights included the visits of Professor Ray Flannery (picture) from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ray was the 1998 Will Ellis Prize winner of the American Physical Society (one of the most prestigious American Prizes in the field of atomic and molecular physics), and Professor Keith Burnett from Oxford University who made seminal contributions to the discovery of Bose Einstein Condensation.
The School of Physical Sciences contributed an impressive number of speakers with talks given by Eugene Kennedy, Vince Ruddy, Tom Leahey, Martin Henry, Tony Cafolla, Enda McGlynn and Mick Kennedy!
Many will also remember the stimulating talk given by our colleague Sean O'Nuallan from the School of Computer Applications about Philosophical issues in modern physics.

The Physics Seminar Series is not just about Physics!
A  telecommunications engineer, a chemist, an astronomer, a mathematician and a medical physicist were among the invited speakers.
Two ex-faculty of the School of Physical Sciences returned to DCU to give talks: Professor Daniel Heffernan (picture) who is now  at NUI Maynooth and Dr Wil van der Putten who is currently at University Hospital, Galway.

Again, an incredible variety of topics was covered, ranging from laser safety to the expansion of the universe and from medical electrodes to industrial plasmas.
Professor John Hurley of the DCU Business School gave a captivating account of  his research on the process of scientific discovery.
